Rita Albrecht

Rita Albrecht has lived in Bemidji for more than 35 years since moving here to attend Bemidji State University. Together with her husband Mike, she owned the Bemidji A&W Restaurant and raised two children in Bemidji.

After earning degrees in Geography and Education at BSU, Rita has had a career in planning, working as assistant planner and community development director for the City of Bemidji; and as development specialist for Headwaters Regional Development Commission.  She is currently a planner for the Department of Natural Resources.  Rita is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and has taught as an adjunct professor in Geography and Political Science at BSU.

Rita is actively engaged in serving her community both as a volunteer and elected official. In addition to serving on the BSU Alumni Board, Rita has served on the boards of several community organizations, including the Joint Planning Board, United Way, Bi-county Community Action Program, Visit Bemidji, and Greater Bemidji Economic Development.  She was elected to the Bemidji City Council in 2010 and was elected Mayor of Bemidji in 2012 and again in 2014.
