What is the Alumni Relative Scholarship program?

The BSU Alumni Relative Scholarship program is sponsored by the Bemidji State University Alumni & Foundation and provides scholarships to students attending BSU who are relatives of contributing alumni. Scholarships are made possible by the alumni of BSU who contribute to the Lakeside Fund.

What is the amount of each scholarship and how many are there?

The Alumni & Foundation Board of Directors approved $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to first-year, returning and transfer students. Scholarship awards are allocated in halves for each semester of the academic year.  In 2017, a total of 45 individual scholarships were awarded to BSU students from a pool of over 100 applicants.  The number of scholarship awards is updated annually based on available funds.

Who can apply for an Alumni Relative Scholarship?

To apply for a scholarship, the candidate must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Accepted for admission to BSU by the deadline date.
  2. Be the daughter, son, spouse, niece (great niece), nephew (great nephew), brother, sister, mother, father, aunt, uncle, first cousin or grandchild of an CONTRIBUTING member of the BSU Alumni Association. Contributing members are those who have contributed $50 or more to the BSU Lakeside Fund in the past 12 months.
  3. Submit a completed application by deadline date.
  4. Carry a minimum of 12 credits per semester to remain eligible.

How do I find out if the candidate's relative is a contributing member of the BSU Alumni Association?

Call or write the Alumni Office (218-755-3989 or alumni@bemidjistate.edu). Be prepared to give the full name of the alumnus with correct spelling. At that time, you will be told if the alumnus is a contributing member or not.

What if the candidate's relative who is an alumnus of BSU is NOT a contributing member of the BSU Alumni Association?

The relative can become contributing by making a tax deductible contribution of $50 or more to the BSU Foundation before the application deadline. Donations can be mailed to: BSU Foundation, 1500 Birchmont Drive NE #17, Bemidji, MN 56601-2699. Checks should be made payable to: BSU Foundation. Or you can make a donation at bsualumni.org.

How are the scholarship winners selected?

The Alumni Relative Scholarship is highly competitive. A scholarship committee made up of alumni from the Board of Directors of the Alumni & Foundation reviews all scholarship applications. The committee considers each section of the application and judges it on a predetermined point scale. When selecting scholarship winners, the committee will take special care in considering ALL areas of ability, talent and circumstance.

If a candidate applied and/or received an Alumni Relative Scholarship last year, do they need to re-apply again?

Yes! A candidate must re-apply for scholarship dollars each academic year.
