And to my grandchildren, I leave the sum of...

Did you know that numerous studies indicate that most people quickly dispose of an inheritance once received? One study found that one-third of people who received an inheritance had negative savings within two years of receiving the inheritance, meaning they fully exhausted the money they had inherited.

The study which was done by a research scientist from The Ohio State University, Dr. Jay Zagorsky, stated that “most people blew through their inheritance quickly.” This study used survey data from the Federal Reserve and supports the long held belief advanced by most charitable organizations that leaving one’s entire estate to family members might not be the wisest way to plan for the distribution of an estate.

Of course, most of us want to leave our family a portion of our estate, but making plans for the distribution of a portion of your estate to a charitable organization, such as the Bemidji State University, can be a smart undertaking.   In doing so you can reduce potential estate tax liability, if any, and even better, you can provide assistance to Bemidji State University through establishment of a scholarship, directing funds to assist a particular college or department or provide support to athletics. If you would like to talk about the many ways you could make an estate gift to benefit Bemidji State University, I encourage you to contact me.   There is not cost nor obligation for us to talk and I may be able to suggest some meaningful ways by which your estate or a portion of such could be directed to Bemidji State University allowing you to leave a meaningful legacy for years to come.
