Bemidji State University Graduate 1974Dr. Hildreth McCarthy graduated from Bemidji State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a heavy minor in chemistry. She went on to earn her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Minnesota. After general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota, she took a fellowship in Dallas, TX, specializing in Colon and Rectal Surgery. Hildy has been a partner in private practice in colon and rectal surgery in New Orleans for the past 23 years. Upon graduating from medical school, Hildy received the UpJohn Award for outstanding student in patient relationship and solicitude. She is a member of the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and in 200l was named one of four Outstanding Physicians in the City of New Orleans by the New Orleans Magazine. A second passion of Hildy's are horses and she is the owner of an equestrian center named Lagniappe Farm in Folsom, Louisiana, that teaches riding to children and adults. In addition she hosts an annual charitable event called "Jumpin' with Jazz" at the farm. Proceeds from this event help fund programs like Habitat for Humanity, ASPCA and a riding program for handicapped children. Other community service activities include a five year membership on the board of Planned Parenthood in New Orleans. In addition to riding horses, Hildy has been very involved in competitive cross country carriage driving, competing nationally with a pair of Arabian mares. She is also a joint-Master of Foxhounds of the Chula Homa Hounds in Jackson, MS. While their full time residence is in New Orleans, Hildy and her husband, Jon Massey, spend late summer and fall at her family home in Western Massachusetts where they foxhunt with their horses.
