Lowell Scearcy

Bemidji State University Graduate 1967 & 1976

Lowell Scearcy graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Bemidji State University in 1967 and a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1976. Lowell started his teaching and coaching career at his alma mater, Pillager High School, in 1967 where he served for two years as the head track coach, and two years coaching the basketball team, one year as an assistant and the other as head coach. He then moved to Verndale High School where he was the head coach for the basketball and baseball teams and served as assistant coach for the football team. During his tenure as coach, his basketball and baseball teams were conference champions each year. In 1972, Lowell began a 27-year teaching career at Brainerd High School, retiring in 1999. He has served as the head baseball coach for 30-years, continuing to coach after retiring as a teacher. At Brainerd High School, he has compiled an impressive 30-year overall record of 483-206, including 13 conference championships, eight section 8AAA championships, a fourth place and a second place finish at the state tournament, as well as two state championships. 22 of his former players were named to play in the high school all-star game, 115 went on to play college baseball and five continued into professional ball. Lowell was named Minnesota State High School Baseball Coach of the Year twice, regional (seven state region) Baseball Coach of the Year once and was a finalist for National Baseball Coach of the Year. He is currently the third winningest high school baseball coach in Minnesota History. He served as President of the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association from 1993-94 and this fall he will be receiving the prestigious Dick Siebert Award from that organization. In addition to high school coaching responsibilities, Lowell also served 21-years as the junior high basketball coach and 29-years as the assistant football coach at Central Lakes College. Lowell also started and coached a VFW baseball team for 15 and 16 year olds, taking the team to the state tournament on nine different occasions. Besides coaching, Lowell has been a high school football and basketball official for 26 years. Lowell and his wife, Diane, live in Brainerd, MN and have two children.
