Bemidji State University Graduate 1949Dr. Dorothy Moore graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1949 with majors in English, Instrumental and Vocal Music. She then taught high school English and vocal and instrumental music in the Goodridge and Russell, Minnesota High Schools. Upon receiving her masters degree in 1953 from the University of Northern Colorado, she taught vocal and instrumental music for a semester in Wykoff, Minnesota, then spent 21 years as a vocal and instrumental music teacher / consultant in the St. Cloud public schools. After a year's sabbatical, Dr. Moore received her Ph.D. in Education from Florida State University in 1973. She moved to Georgia in 1975 and began teaching in the College of Education at Georgia Southern University, which included teaching music methods to music majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Dr. Moore retired from her teaching career in 1990. Her love for music extended far beyond her professional duties, and into her everyday life. She directed church choirs in Russell and St. Cloud, Minnesota. In 1996 she organized a community band in Statesboro, GA called the Ogeechee Area Symphonic Instrumental Society, and continues to be the organization's President. She is member of the Statesboro-Georgia Southern Symphony Board and coordinated an after school strings program for 13 years. Additional activities include serving on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Georgia Southern, serving as a consultant and evaluator of elementary schools for the Georgia Accrediting Commission, and participating in the Habitat for Humanity program in Statesboro. In addition to ongoing contributions, in1994 Dr. Moore funded an endowed music scholarship both at BSU and at Georgian Southern University, providing scholarships to music majors with an emphasis in string instruments.
